Homeopathic treatment for Hirsutism

Hirsutism is the excessive growth of androgen dependent sexual hair (terminal hair) in facial and central part of the body that worries the patient.

OVERVIEW

Hypertrichosis: Hypertrichosis connotes excessive growth of non-sexual (fetal lanugo type) hair.

HyperandrogenismHyperandrogenism is a state of increased serum androgen level with or without any biological effect of hyperandrogenemia.

Virilism: Virilism is defined as the presence of any one or more of the following features—deepening of the voice, temporal balding, amenorrhea, enlargement of clitoris (clitoromegaly) and breast atrophy. It is a more severe form of androgen excess. Virilism may be due to adrenal hyperplasia or tumors of adrenal or ovary.

CAUSES

  • Hirsutism may be associated with excess androgen production either from the ovaries or adrenals or excess stimulation of the endorgan, i.e., hair follicles.

  • It represents one of the early manifestations in the spectrum of virilism. Whereas, virilism is almost always associated with hirsutism (except at birth) but hirsutism may not be associated with virilism.
  • There may be racial or familial link. Increased hair growth is observed during puberty, pregnancy and following menopause.
  • Obesity (android)—Insulin resistance and androgen excess.

Obesity (BMI > 25) associated with distribution of fat primarily in the gluteal and femoral region is called gynoid obesity.

TYPES

1. Idiopathic Hirsutism

  • Definition: Excess hair growth without identifiable hormonal abnormalities.

  • Common in: Women with regular menstrual cycles and normal androgen levels.

  • Possible reason: Increased sensitivity of hair follicles to normal androgen levels or increased activity of the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase.

🔹 2. Androgenic (Hormonal) Hirsutism

This is the most common type and is caused by excess androgen production.

a. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

  • Most common endocrine disorder causing hirsutism.

  • Accompanied by irregular periods, acne, and possible fertility issues.

b. Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH)

  • Genetic enzyme deficiency causing adrenal glands to overproduce androgens.

  • May present in adolescence or early adulthood.

c. Cushing’s Syndrome

  • Caused by high cortisol levels (due to tumor or steroid use).

  • Hirsutism may be accompanied by weight gain, stretch marks, and high blood pressure.

d. Androgen-secreting Tumors

  • Rare, but serious.

  • Usually in ovaries or adrenal glands.

  • Rapid onset of hirsutism and other virilizing features (deep voice, clitoromegaly).

e. Hyperthecosis

  • Severe form of PCOS where ovarian stromal cells produce high androgens.

  • More common in postmenopausal women.

🔹 3. Drug-Induced Hirsutism

Certain medications can trigger hirsutism, including:

  • Anabolic steroids

  • Testosterone

  • Danazol

  • Cyclosporine

  • Minoxidil

  • Phenytoin

🔹 4. Non-Androgenic Hirsutism

  • Rare.

  • May be due to systemic illnesses, like hypothyroidism or chronic kidney disease, even though androgen levels are normal.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Hirsutism is stiff or dark body hair, appearing on the body where women don’t commonly have hair — primarily the face, chest, lower abdomen, inner thighs and back. People have widely varying opinions on what’s considered excessive.

When high androgen levels cause hirsutism, other signs might develop over time, a process called virilization.

Signs of virilization might include:
  • Deepening voice
  • Balding
  • Acne
  • Decreased breast size
  • Increased muscle mass
  • Enlargement of the clitoris

The following guidelines prescribe in an attempt to pinpoint the diagnosis.

WHAT TO EAT

Best Foods for Hirsutism

🔹 1. Low Glycemic Index (GI) Foods

Helps regulate insulin — and since insulin can increase androgen production, this is key.

  • Whole grains (quinoa, oats, brown rice)

  • Legumes (lentils, chickpeas, black beans)

  • Vegetables (broccoli, spinach, kale)

  • Berries (blueberries, strawberries)

  • Nuts and seeds (almonds, flaxseeds, chia)

🔹 2. Anti-Inflammatory Foods

Chronic inflammation is linked to hormone imbalances.

  • Fatty fish (salmon, sardines, mackerel)

  • Turmeric (with black pepper for better absorption)

  • Ginger

  • Leafy greens and cruciferous veggies (broccoli, cauliflower)

  • Green tea

🔹 3. Fiber-Rich Foods

Fiber helps clear excess hormones through digestion and improves insulin resistance.

  • Fruits and vegetables (apples, carrots, beets)

  • Whole grains

  • Lentils and beans

🔹 4. Foods Rich in Zinc & Magnesium

These can support hormone balance.

  • Pumpkin seeds

  • Spinach

  • Cashews

  • Avocados

  • Dark chocolate (in moderation)

🔹 5. Spearmint Tea

  • Some studies show 2 cups per day can help lower androgen levels naturally over a few weeks.

  • Bonus: it’s soothing and hydrating!

❌ Foods to Avoid (They Might Make Hirsutism Worse)

  • Refined sugars and processed carbs (white bread, pastries, candy)

  • Dairy (especially if sensitive to hormones in milk)

  • Red meat (high in saturated fat and can spike insulin)

  • Fried foods

  • Caffeinated soft drinks (and energy drinks)

DIET AND REGIMEN

Hirsutism-Friendly Diet Plan

✅ General Guidelines

  • Eat 3 balanced meals and 1–2 small snacks daily.

  • Choose whole, unprocessed foods.

  • Focus on low-GI carbs, lean proteins, and healthy fats.

  • Drink plenty of water (2–3 liters/day).

  • Avoid skipping meals — this can disrupt blood sugar and hormone levels.
