Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral illness that can cause a wide range of symptoms, ranging from mild to severe. Symptoms typically appear 4-10 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito and may include the following:

  1. High Fever: Sudden onset of a high fever, often reaching up to 104°F (40°C).
  2. Severe Headache: Intense and often throbbing headache, which is a common feature of dengue fever.
  3. Pain Behind the Eyes: Pain or discomfort, often described as a deep ache, behind the eyes, which can be quite distinctive.
  4. Joint and Muscle Pain: Joint and muscle pain, sometimes referred to as “breakbone fever” due to the severity of the discomfort. This pain can be severe and make movement uncomfortable.
  5. Rash: A rash may appear a few days after the fever starts. It is typically a maculopapular rash, which means it consists of small, flat, red spots or raised bumps.
  6. Mild Bleeding: Some individuals with dengue fever may experience mild bleeding, such as nosebleeds, gum bleeding, or easy bruising. This can be more common in severe cases.
  7. Fatigue and Weakness: Dengue fever can cause extreme fatigue and weakness, which may persist for several weeks after the acute phase of the illness.
  8. Nausea and Vomiting: Nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain are common symptoms, although they are less specific.
  9. Mild Respiratory Symptoms: Some individuals may experience mild respiratory symptoms like a cough or sore throat.

It’s important to note that dengue fever can progress to a severe form known as dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome in some cases. These severe forms of dengue can be life-threatening and are characterized by more severe bleeding, abdominal pain, and signs of shock. If you suspect you or someone you know has dengue fever, especially if symptoms worsen, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly.

Dengue is primarily transmitted by the Aedes mosquito, so preventive measures such as using mosquito repellent, wearing protective clothing, and eliminating mosquito breeding sites (standing water) are crucial, especially in areas where dengue is endemic.
